Book Launch – Objects from April and May with Zena Agha and Sarah Lasoye

  • Reference Point 2 Arundel Street London, England, WC2R 3DA United Kingdom (map)

‘A moving collection written with love and defiance.’ — Isabella Hammad, author of The Parisian

Join Zena Agha and Sarah Lasoye for an evening of readings, music and conversation to celebrate Zena’s new poetry collection, Objects from April and May—a rumination on the sanctity and significance of cherished possessions.

‘SEE THIS AS AN OFFERING. A MANIFESTO FOR THE PRECARIOUSNESS AND PRECARITY OF OBJECTS.’

Informed by the theft of precious gold pendants, these poems trace each taken item across years and borders, from a supermarket in Brooklyn to a checkpoint in Occupied Palestine. Bristling with a controlled melancholy, they show us how much material loss can teach us about love, attachment and sorrow.

Zena Agha is a Palestinian-Iraqi writer and poet from London. She has received fellowships from the Asian American Writers’ Workshop and the Millay Colony for the Arts. Her writing has been featured by The MarginsThe New York Times and NPR. Objects from April and May is her first book.

Sarah Lasoye is a poet and writer from London. She is an alumna of the Barbican Young Poets and a current member of Octavia—Poetry Collective for Women of Colour. She is the author of Fovea / Ages Ago.

Featuring an oud performance by Kareem Samara. Kareem is a musician, composer and organiser from London. His practice investigates the intersections of struggles and combines traditional Arabic instruments with electronics to create a unique soundscape of protest. He is a serial collaborator (Smoked Poets, Ryan Harvey) and composes for various theatres in and around the UK.
